Susan Gager was born August 13th, 1843, at Mariposa, Peterboro county, Canada. With her parents she moved to Decorah, Iowa, when ten years of age, and the following spring moved to Kendallville. July 8th, 1866, she was married to Alphonso Brooks. They lived a few years in Kansas, but returned to Cresco about twenty-four years ago, where she has been one of the most useful and helpful women of the city. Gifted with sensitive sympathy for the afflicted she was found wherever there was sorrow or trials, ready with kind words and deeds to comfort and encourage. Gifted with intuitive discernment of the needs of the sick, she went about the sick rooms with healing touch and restoring remedies, a nurse that brought blessings wherever she went. Memory of her will linger long and kindly with the many who have received her ministrations. Fate was not always kind to her, but she met her hardships bravely and smiled cheerily when her burdens heaviest. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and believed that christianity consists of being good and doing good.
She was the mother of eight children, five sons and three daughters, one daughter having died in infancy. Two years ago she knew that she must die of Brights disease, but thoughtful for her children she tried to make home homelike, despite her weakness. The summons came sooner than was expected, Tuesday, Nov. 20, she passed from earth to heaven, conscious and ready to meet the future, for "She had done what she could."
Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Heald, in the Baptist church Wednesday afternoon. Her grave is in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
