Elijah I. Barker was born near Richmond, Ind., Dec. 25, 1836. He died July 17, 1913. In the spring of 1857 he came with his parents to Howard county, Iowa, coming across the plains in the primitive way of that time- by covered wagon. He enlisted in Co. D, 30th Regiment, Iowa Vol. Infantry on Aug. 21, 1862, and then in February 1864, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant of the 9th Regulars, Colored. He resigned from the army in the fall of 1864 and returned to his farm in Winneshiek county.

He was married Dec. 8, 1864, to Miss Jane Brown of Winneshiek county. Seven children were born to them, four of whom- George, Philip and Josephine of Cresco and Mrs. McVey of Sultan, Wash., living today- Melinda, Grant and Elijah having died early in life.

Mr. Barker was a sincere christian and one of the early members of the M. E. church, having united with that church in his early life. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, being one of the oldest members of the lodge at New Oregon. With the exception of six years spent in Washington, he has lived in Cresco and vicinity since coming to Iowa.

His beloved wife and children mourn today a kind and loving husband and father. These with two brothers, Amos of this city, and John of Portland, Oregon, and Mrs. Dow of Cresco, are the near relatives of Mr. Barker.

He was a man who lived in a quiet,, consistent, Christian manner. The community in which he lived will greatly miss him. He had been an invalid for more that a year when he was stricken with appoplexy. The sympathy of the many friends is extended to the family in their bereavement.

The funeral services were conducted from the residence by his pastor, Rev. B.W. Soper, and burial was in Oaklawn.
