William James Brierley, pioneer resident of Howard county, passed away at the home of his nephew, Wm. A. Marsh at Lamoni, Ia., Saturday, December 28, at the age of 81 years, 4 months, and 28 days.

Mr. Brierley was born in Philadelphia, Pa., July 31, 1865. He came to Howard county with his parents in 1870, and lived on the Brierley homestead until 1908. He farmed for a few years in Minnesota, returning to Iowa in 1912 to make his home with his sister, Mrs. J.S. Marsh, until she passed away in November, 1941. Since then he has lived in the home of his nephew at Lamoni.

He received his early education in the home school two miles west of Cresco which has always been designated as the Brierley school. Most of his active life was spent in farming. He was an exceptionally good stock man, and particularly fond of fine horses. Even after he retired from the farm, he retained an active interest in farming. Each year he would look forward to the Howard county fair where he could visit his old friends and exchange opinions on the merits of the various livestock exhibited.

He remained very active in both mind and body up to the last. This past fall he attended the Howard county fair, visited his nephew, Rowland Brierley in Kansas City in October and his sister Mrs. S.E. Raffety in Grinnell in November.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Wm. and Ann Brierley; two brothers, Ben and John Brierley; and three sisters, Mrs. Robert Gilcrest, Mrs. James McMillan, and Mrs. J. S. Marsh. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. S.E. Raffety of Grinnell, many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

The funeral service was held at the Bradley funeral home Monday morning at 10:30, conducted by Rev. L.W. Verts, pastor of the Baptist church of Cresco. Pallbearers were: Roger Clark, Haswell Rucker, Howard Pollock, Joe Tuchek, Joe Grosser and Paul Vagts. Interment was in the Oaklawn cemetery. Mrs. H.G. Addie and Mrs. Lloyd Soloman sang "Rock of Ages," and "Face to Face."

Those attending from a distance were: Wm. A. Marsh, daughter Helen and son Will of Lamoni; Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Brierley and Kathryn Marsh of Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. W.S. Greenwald and LaVerne Raffety of Grinnell.
