Boy Drowned.
Thursday last, at about 5 o’clock, news was brought to this office that Dana Mead, son of F. J. Mead, was drowned in a small lake in the west part of town near his residence. The bare announcement of so terrible a calamity sent every man from the office in an instant, Dr. Jones, with his fast team at full speed, and half the town going at full speed in the direction of the fatal pond. On the way it was learned that the family called on to mourn the loss of a child was Mr. B. Hollenback’s. Several physicians were promptly at the spot with battery and stomach pump and using every other known means to resuscitate the child, but without avail.
This terrible accident came from a lot of boys and this one about eight years old going in bathing in a pond shallow about the margin but near the center suddenly going down to the depth of seven or eight feet. This boy was wading out toward the center of the pond when suddenly down he went, his companions immediately giving the alarm. Walter Schofield and another man came when he had been in the water ten or fifteen minutes, rescuing the body. The parents and friends in their terrible grief are entitled to and have the sympathy of the public.
