CRESCO- Memorial services for John E. Benson of Cresco, IA will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 30, 2008 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Inurnment will be held in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco, IA.

Friends may call from 4 - 7 p.m. on Thursday evening at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, IA and also one hour prior to services at the church.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, IA is handling the arrangements.

John 68, died Sunday, May 25, 2008 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco after a courageous battle with Lymphoma.

John Earl Benson was born January 27, 1940 in Des Moines, IA and was adopted by Ruth (Emslie) Benson and Earl Benson when he was six weeks old. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1958. He served in the United States Navy in the nuclear weapons division and returned to Cresco to join his father in the family farming operation.

On October 27, 1962 he married Lynette Brantner at St. John's Lutheran Church in Durand, WI. John and Lynette spent the majority of their life together in the Cresco area working within the farming and trucking industry. They were part owner of Kosters and Benson Transport and owner of Cresco Truck Service. Since September of 1995, John has worked at Hawkeye Sanitation.

John loved farming and fixing anything. He was a skilled woodworker. He enjoyed bird watching, civil war history, gardening, camping, and traveling. He has served on the Immanuel Lutheran Church Council and was very proud to be a charter member of the Cresco Community Lion's Club. John would never hesitate to help another in need and was a valuable member of the community.

He is survived by his wife, Lynette (Brantner) Benson; three daughters: Rhonda (Arlan) Smith of Cresco, IA, Becky Lepa (Cory Christianson) of Cresco, IA, Trisha Benson of San Antonio, TX; six grandchildren: Joshua Byrnes of Auburn, AL, Nicole Smith, Ryan Smith, Courtney Lepa, Sydney Lepa, and Samantha Lepa of Cresco, IA; one great granddaughter; Hannah Garcia; one sister: Carol Fairbairn; one step-brother: Jerry Nash; sisters and brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his mother: Ruth Emslie Benson Nash; his father: Earl Benson; and his step-father: Bernard Nash.
