ELMA - Mass of Christian Burial for Lavern "Toby" J. Lentz of Elma, Iowa, formerly of Waterloo, will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Father Steve Garner officiating. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Elma.

Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the funeral mass on Friday.

Lavern, 92, died peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Elma.

Lavern Joseph Lentz was born Aug. 16, 1921 in Fillmore, Iowa, the son of Lawrence and Bridget Lentz. When he was a young boy in 1931, his family moved to an Elma farm. He graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1939.

On April 23, 1945, he married Jeanette Frances Brennan at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fairbank, Iowa. He farmed near Elma until moving to Waterloo; and then to Dewar, Iowa in the early 1950s. He was employed by Rath Packing for 30 years; and retired in 1983. During his time at Rath, he also worked part-time for Dewar Elevator. He continued to work part-time for Petersen-Tietz Florist, and an Evansdale grocery store until full retirement.

He was a member of St John's, Waterloo, and St Francis, Barclay, Catholic Churches. He was also active in the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing cards, reading, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Lavern is survived by five children: Jean Hilbert of Waverly, Larry Lentz of Davenport, William Lentz of Madison, Wis., Janice Torrey of Waterloo, and Cheri Riggins of LaPorte City; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Lavern was preceded in death by his wife Jeanette; four brothers: Charlie, Francis, Ed, and Don; and his sister: Marie (Robert) Brennan.

Memorials may be directed to the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Elma, Iowa.
