William Lloyd Barker, Cresco Lawyer More Than 50 Years, Dies on Friday
Congregational Church Filled Sunday for Funeral Services. Dean of Bar, Mason 50 Years.
A large number of relatives and friends filled the Cresco Congregational church Sunday afternoon for the funeral services of William Lloyd Barker, 83, highly respected Cresco attorney for more than 50 years, who died of a heart condition in his home Friday morning. Mr. Barker had retired from active law practice two years ago because of illness.
The services were conducted by the Rev. Ralph Cockshoot, vicar of Saint David's Episcopal church, of which Mr. Barker was a member. Burial was made in Oak Lawn cemetery with the Bradley Funeral home in charge of the arrangements.
One of the oldest members of the Iowa Bar association, Mr. Barker served as county attorney from 1918-1926 and was city attorney for 40 years.
In addition to exercising his professional duties, Mr. Barker was active in civic activities and served on the board of directors of the Cresco Union Savings bank.
William Lloyd Barker, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Kendrick Barker, was born in Cresco, May 8, 1877. He was graduated from the Cresco high school in 1894, and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa in 1898, and his law degree at the university in 1899. He became associated with his father's law firm, serving as partner until 1902 when he entered private practice. He became ill about three years ago and retired from active practice in 1957.
Mr. Barker's service as city attorney spanned the years 1906 to 1946. He helped guide the Cresco public school system as member of the board of education from 1911 to 1938, and served as chairman of the Republican county central committee from 1924 to 1936.
The Cresco attorney had been a director and legal advisor of the Cresco Union Savings bank since 1903. He was elected to succeed his father as a member of the board at that time and continued to serve until the time of his death.
He also served as director of the Northern Iowa Telephone company for many years.
Among his other civic and patriotic contributions included his serving as chairman of the ration board during World War II. Mr. Barker was a member of the Cresco Chamber of Commerce, a 50-year member of the Masonic lodge, and York and Knights Templar.
Mr. Barker was married to Bertha Farrington at Winnebago, Minnesota, June 23, 1904. Mr. and Mrs. Barker became the parents of two children.
Surviving Mr. Barker are his wife, Bertha, and his children, Inez, at home, and his son Lloyd Farrington Barker, of Minneapolis. There are two sisters, Mrs. George Story of Sioux City, and Mrs. E.M. Grobel of Spokane, Washington.
