DIED--TOWNE--At the residence of his son-in-law, D. A. Browne, Esq., in Orleans township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, on the morning of Dec. 1st, 1875, after a somewhat protracted illness, Dea. Arad Towne, in the 85th year of his age.
Mr. Towne was born in Coleraine, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, where the greater portion of his life was spent, rearing a large family and filling many positions of public trust and usefulness.
He removed to Iowa in 1862, and though already past the time of life usually allotted to man, his diligent hands were for many years ever busy in assisting to open up and improve his new home. Though in his later life he had not been an active participant in public affairs, yet his keen and vigorous mind was ever alive to matters of public interest, and his varied knowledge and ripe experience made him a safe and valuable counsellor.
But the crowning excellence of this good man's character was his living, trusting Christian faith. Truly it may be said of him that "he walked
with God," and the hallowing influence of this Divine Fellowship was ever with him, blending with all his impulses and aspirations, and molding his life into a pattern of integrity and faithfulness. His closing days were a fitting sequel to his life. The Christian's hope was his sure support, while gentle and loving hands ministered to his every want, and smoothed his passage to the tomb."Spirit! thy labor is o'er,
Thy term of probation is run;
Thy steps now have reached
The untrodden shore,
And the race of immorials begun."
