Howard County Times October 26, 1871
Died in Cresco, October 17th, 1871, of Consumption, Mrs. Bertha Halsted, in the 25th year of her age.
For a year and a half before her death that dread disease--Consumption--had been fastening its deadly fangs upon her, and it became apparent to her friends that her stay would be brief. She comprehended her situation fully, and bore her pain with Christian fortitude, and without a murmur. An indomitable energy and perseverance kept her up much longer that most persons would have withstood the ravages of that fell disease.
She had for some time been an earnest member of the Congregational Church at Florenceville, which place and the adjoining village of Granger, had been her home for the last six years of her life, until within about three weeks of her death, when, at the request of ourself and family, to whom we believe she was warmly attached, she was brought to Cresco to spend the last days of her life on earth.
In her early death we feel that another true friend has crossed the mysterious river, nevermore to greet us with a welcoming smile in all the days that are to come, as she has so often done in those that are past. But in the midst of our grief we have the cheering satisfaction of feeling that still another light has been kindled on the "other shore' to aid in guiding our erring feet to the final goal, and that another precious jewel has been set in the eternal, fadeless crown above.
The funeral was held from the Congregational Church in Cresco, on Thursday, and the remains deposited in the Cresco cemetery.
"Dearest sister, thou has left us,
Here our loss we deeply feel;
But 'tis God that hast bereft us,
He can all our sorrows heal.Yet again we hope to meet thee,
When the day of life is fled,
And in Heaven, with joy to greet thee,
Where no farewell tears are shed."In the October 19th issue it tell us that Bertha was the wife of Mr. S. I. Halsted.
