Funeral services for Alvin DeVries will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, October 24, 2013 at Chester United Methodist Church in Chester, IA with Pastor Melanie Greengo officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs. Visitation will be held 5:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at Chester United Methodist Church and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Alvin L. DeVries, 89, of Chester, Iowa passed away on October 20, 2013 at Regional Health Services of Howard County with his family by his side.

Alvin was born on July 29, 1924 in Rushmore, MN to Martin and Grace (Olthoff) DeVries. He grew up on a farm near Sibley, Iowa with 2 brothers Marvin and George. He attended school in Sibley, where he met his wife, Lorna Mae Johnson.

They were united in marriage on August 10, 1946. They farmed near Rushmore, MN. In 1957, they moved to a farm near Chester, Iowa where they raised their three children.

Alvin and Lorna enjoyed many bus trip vacations, square dancing, bowling, and playing cards. Alvin enjoyed making wood toys for his grandchildren, and Lorna would paint them. He also enjoyed Casino trips with his daughters and looked forward to spring and Harvest season where he would drive the tractor and grain trucks with his son. Alvin very much enjoyed watching his grandchildren play softball no matter how far the drive.

Alvin was a long time member of the Chester United Methodist Church. He helped coach his daughter’s softball team and was a 4-H leader.

He is survived by three children Doug (Janet) DeVries, Elaine (Gary) Gassett, both of Lime Springs, and Denise (Dan) Miller of Rochester, MN, five grandchildren, Melisa Bartel (Matt) of Kenyon, MN, DJ (Mary) Miller of Lime Springs, IA, Michael (Misty) Gassett of Owatonna, MN, Jessica and Jennifer DeVries of Lime Springs, 9 great grandchildren, Alexandra, Savannah, Megan, William, Dillon, Danny, Vanessa, Taryn, and Hayden, two sisters-in-law, Trena DeVries and Mavis Christians, and one brother in-law Arnold Molendorp, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lorna, and two brothers, Marvin and George.
