John Halvorson, son of Halvor Aslakson and wife Gunhild nee Tallesen, was born at Ommersdal, Kyrkemoen, Siljords, Prestegjeld, Telemarken, Norway, Europe, February 5, 1842. He had four sisters and one brother. He was baptized in Siljord church March 25, 1842. The family moved to America when John was a small boy and stayed in Chicago. Here John was confirmed in June, 1868, in Our Saviours Lutheran church by Rev. H. A. Preus, later President of the Norwegian Lutheran Synod of America.
A little over 20 years old John volunteered and Aug. 21, 1862 entered the army of the North as a private in Co. F 34th Regiment Iowa Infantry. He served under the Stars and Stripes for the next three years, being mustered out at Houston, Texas, Aug. 15, 1865. He shared the hardships of the army in the southwestern campaign, taking part in battles near Ft. Morgan, Blakely and the battles before and the seige and surrender of Vicksburg. He was later in the detail whose duty it was to clear the Mississippi for commerce down to the Gulf. While escaping being wounded he came out of the war tired and weary as did all soldiers in all wars.
He returned to Illinois and on Jan. 10, 1871, he married Miss Margit Peterson of Capon, Ill. To this union were born two daughters and one son. Hilmar is dead and buried at Chicago. Mrs. Julia Crapser died last year and is buried at Big Lake, Minn.; Mrs. Dwight Mitchell of Capron, Ill., survives and lives at Capron, Ill. She visited her ailing father two weeks ago but was not able to come to the funeral. His wife died in 1878, and then John moved to Iowa, living at Little Turkey. Here he married Miss Sarah Hanson, daughter of George and wife Margit. They moved to Cresco in 1882 where they lived since. To this union were born four children: Martin of Grand Rapids, Minn.; Mathilda Jorgine, died while young; Anetta Christine, Mrs. Greenslade, Bluffton, Iowa; Alice Josephine died young. John has been ailing the past six months and came to his death March 27 at 8 p.m. his age being 83 years, 1 month, and 22 days.
He is survived by his brother, Halvor, Lake Mills, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. J.M. Peterson, Norhtwood, Ia.; and Mrs. Osne Kvambek, Mendota, Minn. The funeral was held Monday, March 30, from his church, First Lutheran of Cresco, with sermon by his pastor H.M. Mormann. Interment was made at Oaklawn.
Jon was a kind Christian and will be missed by his many friends.
