Dr. Elizabeth Almond passed away at Mercy hospital Monday, Jan. 12, 1925, at the age of 75 years, after a lingering illness. Deceased was born in the state of New York and came to Cresco as a teacher in our public schools in 1886, a position which she held for almost six years and for which she was eminently well fitted, her work being held in especial esteem by her superintendent, E.G. Cooley. She won and enjoyed also unusual respect and affection from her pupils.

She gave up teaching in 1892 to enter the medical profession. After completing her course in Chicago she returned to Cresco to practice. During her best years this practice kept her very busy, but it wore her out for she was unable to throw off, either mentally or physically, the burden of a patient's illness. Many are the homes in which she has worked and worried all night over a sick baby, giving to it not only a doctor's skill, but a nurse's care, and a mother's anxiety as well.

Dr. Almond gave the last of her strength to the work of the Red Cross during the war, going down to their rooms every day whatever the weather, and working tirelessly and unfailingly when it seemed a marvel that she could go at all. Her pride in the war record of her nephew, Mr. Bush, gave brightness to those hard days.

She was a devoted member of the Congregational church, always faithful and regular in attendance, even when unable to walk and had to be taken in a car. She was also faithful to her club, Friends in Council, of which she was a charter member, and in the early years her papers were the events of the club calendar.

Although she could not know of the generosity of her nephew and nieces in her declining years, their names were constantly upon her lips.

The funeral was held in the Congregational church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W.A. Bockoven, with interment at Oaklawn.

Her two nieces, Mrs. O.C. Adamson of Minneapolis, and Mrrs. G.T. Struble of Sioux City, came to attend the funeral.
