Viola Irene Platz, 95, of Lime Springs IA went to be with her Lord on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at the Evans Memorial Home, Cresco IA. Viola was born in the family home east of Cresco on October 26, 1917 to Herbert and Fannie [Harmon] Schaefer. This farm is where Viola grew up. Viola graduated from Cresco High School on 5-29-1935 and went on to attend a Beauty School in Waterloo IA. In October of 1940 Viola purchased a Beauty Shop in Cresco that she operated until the birth of her first child. Viola married Waldon Platz on 12-26-1941, at First Baptist Church in Cresco IA, where they originally met. The Lord blessed them with 68 years together. Waldon and Viola together committed their lives to Jesus at a tent revival meeting in Lime Springs IA in 1952 and spent their entire lives serving at First Baptist Church. Viola was a very busy lady all of her life. She would plant rows and rows of gladiolus, her favorite flower, and many times these bouquets were displayed on the altar at First Baptist Church. Viola was kept very busy sewing, cooking, and baking along with raising six children. When the kids were out of the house she had time to quilt. Viola made beautiful quilts out of leftover fabrics that she saved from making clothes for herself and family. She made quilts for each of her children. Viola could be found in the garden, kitchen, chicken coop or barn at any given time and ran “the ship” in the Platz household! Viola also enjoyed many hours compiling information on the Schaefer and Platz family tree. Viola was an avid reader and a diligent student of the Bible. Often times her Bible lay open on the dining room table. Viola was a quiet woman who was not a conversationalist, but often came up with wonderful one liners and she enjoyed collecting jokes and verses. Her children recall when their Mom would get to laughing about something she would laugh so hard that she would cry. One of these humorous sayings was found in her Bible: “Dear Lord: So far today, God, I’ve done all right. I haven’t gossiped, haven’t lost my temper, I haven’t been greedy, nasty, selfish or overindulgent. I’m very grateful for that. But in a few minutes Lord, I’m going to get out of bed, and from then on, I’m probably going to need a lot more help. Amen.” Viola leaves her children: David (Linda) Platz, Orchard IA; Doris (Art) Brookins, Chatfield MN; Ruth (Gordon) Ernst, The Villages FL; Janice (Robert) Nickelson, Rochester MN; Duane (Donna) Platz, Allentown PA; and Gary (Linda) Platz, Stewartville MN.
