A Mass of Christian Burial for Daniel J. Slifka of Cresco was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013 at Notre Dame Catholic Church hall in Cresco with Father Dennis Cain officiating. Interment was held in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
Visitation was held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Monday at the church.
Daniel, 87, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2013 at Regional Health Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco.
Daniel J. Slifka was the youngest of five children born to John Slifka and Anna (Schneider) Slifka. He attended Assumption Grade School and a rural country schoolhouse and earned a GED. Daniel lived his entire life in Howard County.
On June 23, 1948, he married Irene Borseth at the Assumption Catholic Church parsonage. Daniel and Irene lived in the house they built for more than four decades, until two years ago when he moved to Evans Memorial Home.
Daniel was a doting father and grandfather with an outstanding sense of humor and strong faith. As a young man, Daniel was employed by Farmers Coop Creamery, Burgess and Sons (lumber yard), and Elvin Hanneman (home construction). He was a very talented cabinet builder and carpenter who built multiple homes and custom cabinets in the Cresco area. He enjoyed repairing cars, starting with his 1928 and 1931 Model A's.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Irene; daughter: Daneille Slifka-Kirby (Karlos) of Des Moines; a son: Darrell of State Center; granddaughters: Celene, Sydney, and Shay Slifka; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Slifka and Lucille Borseth; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Mildred Kudrna; brothers: Clarence, Gerald and Elmer; daughter-in-law: Cheryl (Pollock) Slifka; and nephews and cousins.
Memorials may be given to Notre Dame Catholic School, 221 2nd Ave. E, Cresco, Iowa 52136 or to a favorite charity.
