OBITUARY
DIED, at the residence of her son, Judge D. O. Preston, in Cresco, Iowa, August 29th, 1869, MRS. HARRIET PRESTON, aged 66 years, 7 months and 8 days.
(a portion missing) death of MRS. HARRIET PRESTON, have in them lessons of more than ordinary import, happily, to bless those to whom she was nearest and dearest, and to illustrate that surpassingly lovely are the steps, pointed by Faith, which lead to the Great Hereafter.
In the hopeful doctrines of the Presbyterian Church she was reared and educated, in that grand and majestic country in the interior ot the State of New York, where the spirit of GOD, in most magnificent scenery, is continually communing with hearts so apt, so docile and devotional as was hers. Many will remember that in her early history, her path and life were of peace, of devotion and of untroubled faith; and these excellencies which so well become" the life that is," she carried with her so well and nobly through her long pilgrimage of nearly three score years and ten, that her reward and her election in the life to come, are, and must be, rendered sure.
This estimable lady had reared and taught in these excellent theories of every day life, a family of six children, to manhood and womanhood, to rise up and call her blessed who now shall importune for them at the right hand of GOD. Among these, of our immediate acquaintance, are, Hon. D. O. Preston, Mrs. W. F. Daniels, Mrs. Jas. Irvin and Mrs. Thos. Fleming.
We would gladly further comment on lessons which the life of this excellent lady teaches and illustrates, but the space of your valuable paper, Mr. Editor, prohibits extended comments.
It was particularly noticed by the sorrowing relatives, gathered about the death-bed, that to the last moment she recognized those near and dear to her, bade them meet her in the beautiful realms above, that for a moment the calmness and placidity of youth overspread the beloved countenance, which age and disease had worn. Calmly and trustfully she died; hopefully do her immediate family contemplate the sad separation. -- Our sympathy is due and gladly extended to the bereaved, and our prayers for the well-remembered departed.
