Services held for R. Monroe Phillips

Funeral services were held for Richard Monroe Phillips, 75, of Cresco, at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 10, at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco with the Rev. Robert Holdorf presiding. Pall bearers were grandsons: Brandon, Scott, Todd, Ben, Ric, Ryan and Jason Phillips, and Steven Jean. Interment was in Phillips Cemetery at Bonair with military honors conducted by the Cresco VFW & American Legion Posts.

Richard died at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco on January 6, 1998.

Born in Cresco on July 16, 1922, the son of Everett and Lila (Bawden) Phillips, Richard was baptized in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1939 and attended Iowa State College for two years before enlisting in the Marine Corps in July of 1942, serving until January of 1946. Following his discharge he joined the VFW.

Richard was united in marriage to Deanna Boyles in Yuma, AZ, on June 10, 1943. He entered college at Colorado State in September of 1946, where he was a member of the Alpha Zeta and Alpha Tau Omega fraternities. Graduating in June of 1949, he was engaged as the high vocational agriculture instructor in Rockyford, CO, and taught there until February of 1954, when he resigned to move to Cresco where he joined his father in dairy farming.

Richard is survived by his wife, Deanna; four sons: Richard D. of Des Moines; William of Nevada, IA; Neil of Buffalo, NY; and Bruce of Cresco; one daughter: Jerilyn Jean of Santee, CA; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and one brother: Guy Phillips of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
