The late Charles Phillips

The deceased was son of Rufus and Maria Phillips. He was born in Wyoming County in the state of New York in the year 1840. In 1852 he came to this county and with his parents located upon the farm where he died. On the 6th of February 1868 he was married to Elwy Moshier and to them were born three children two of whom survive, Lewis, aged 15, and a daughter aged about 14 years. The widow with the children have moved to Cresco, for the advantages of our public school, a step Mr. Phillips had long comtemplated for the benefit of his children. Charley, as he was familiarly called by nearly all who knew him, was a prosperous and well to do farmer who took pride in his vocation. He had provided himself with one of the best and most substantial homes in Howard county, and was surrounding himself and family with the comforts of life, anticipating years of enjoyment. He was in Cresco on the 3rd of February, we thought in more than his usual good health, took a severe cold which prostrated him completely that night and although medical aid was promptly procured, the disease seemed to settle upon his lungs and ere his friends in Cresco hardly realized that he was ill tidings came of his death. He was a man who was true to his friends and his family, had no enemies, was respected by all and is universally mourned.
