Services held for Marcella Opat

Funeral services for Marcella Opat of Cresco were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 15 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Schley with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Michael L. Tauke, pastor of the Catholic parish in Cresco officiated. Conway Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Marcella, 84, died Sunday, December 13, 1998 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Marcella was born February 13, 1914 in Howard County, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Zak) Havel. She attended the rural school.

On October 9, 1933, she was united in marriage to Edward Opat at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. After Edward’s death on December 29, 1992, Marcella continued to live on the farm with help from her children, grandchildren and neighbors until just recently.

Marcella was a member of the Holy Cross Parish and Rosary Society of Schley and the Assumption Church and Rosary Society in recent years. She played the accordion.

Survivors include: one son, Sylvester of Cresco; one daughter, Joyce Jirak of Cresco; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Agnes Milota of Elma, Martha Hosek of Charles City, and Anna Samec of Cresco.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; three brothers, Frank, Lewis, and twin, Marceline; and six sisters: Frances Frana, Rosie Triska, Mary Frana, Emma Moravetz, Celia Vokaty, and Lillian Pecinovsky.
