Joseph Opat, 77, services yesterday

Services for Joseph F. Opat, 77, were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 11 at Holy Cross Church in Schley with the Rev. Allen M. Schmitt officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Arrangements were with Conway Funeral Home.

He died October 8, 1988 at the Cresco Care Center.

Joseph F. Opat was born September 18, 1910 in Howard county to Frank and Agnes (Sir) Opat. He attended the rural schools and in Lourdes.

Joe married Loretta Koudelka on October 11, 1932 at Protivin. They were the parents of two children. Joe farmed in the area until retirement. Loretta died January 28, 1962.

On May 18, 1963 Joe married Margaret Zobeck at Elma.

Survivors are his wife, Margaret; a daughter, Evelyn Lindquist of Stewartville, MN; three step-children, Joseph Zobeck of Evansdale, Evelyn Murray and Gladys Novak, both of Charles City; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren; 13 step grandchildren and 25 step great grandchildren; also a brother, Ed Opat of Cresco and two sisters, Emma Korbel of Lime Springs and Ruth Rethamel of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, a son, Raphael; five sisters, Agnes Hruska, Frances Foley and three who died in Czechoslovakia; three brothers, Frank and two who died in Czechoslovakia.
