Walter Groth, 77, services Wednesday
Funeral services for Walter Groth, 77, were held at 2:00 p.m. May 6 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Maple Leaf with the Rev. Bernhardt Polesky officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with Conway Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
He died May 4, 1987 in the Riceville Community Nursing Home following a lingering illness.
Walter Friedrick Carl Groth was born December 26, 1909 in Saratoga township, the son of Wilhelm and Anna (Ball) Groth. On September 19, 1933 he married Ida Frahm. They lived in Saratoga where Walter worked on the Star Route and as a carpenter. In 1941 they started farming near Elma and continued until 1976 when he retired.
Walter is survived by his wife, Ida; one son, David and two daughters, Mrs. Nell (LaVonne) Prather of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Richard (Carol) Baethke of Lime Springs; seven grandchildren; also one brother, Norbert Groth of Elma and two sisters, Leona Schrieber and Alvina Buls, both of Riceville.
His parents and two brothers, Erdman and Leonard preceded him in death.
