Louie Deterding Funeral Held At Maple Leaf

Funeral services for Louie Deterding, 89, long-time resident of the Elma community, were conducted from St. Paul’s Lutheran church at Maple Leaf, Thursday afternoon.

The Rev. Harold E. Mountain conducted the service. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Deterding died at the Good Samaritan Center in Cresco, last Tuesday from complications of age. He had been in failing health for some time but especially sick for the last three weeks.

Mr. Deterding was born in Stadhagen, Germany, March 14, 1877, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Deterding. He came to Bremer county, Iowa, with his parents in 1893 and moved to the Elma community in 1901. Mr. Deterding was married to Bertha Laue on May 11, 1911, in the Maple Leaf church. Mrs. Deterding died in 1959.

Mr. Deterding farmed north of Elma until 1958 when he moved in Elma and made his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Stevenson. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church.

Surviving are three children, Henry Deterding, Mrs. Gerald (Marie) Stevenson and Mrs. Geo. (Edna) Fountain, all of Elma. Also surviving are six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Deterding was the last surviving member of his family which included his parents, a sister and brothers.

Attending the funeral were relatives from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Waterloo, Cresco, and Lime Springs.
