The Angel of Death entered our midst and chose to claim the soul of W. James Banks.

Mr. Banks was born on a farm at Rock Rapids, Ia., Feb. 4, 1889, the son of Joseph and Alice Banks. At the age of 12, he began working for the firm now known as Smith, Lichty & Hilman at Waterloo. He worked there for a great number of years at the end of which time he became business manager of the company. Aug. 20, 1935, he was married to Grace Rose Svestka at the church of the Holy Cross at Schley by Rev. J. F. Skluzacek.

In the spring of 1939, he moved to Galesburg, Ill., where he filled the capacity as wholesale manager for Jordan & Co., of that place and still was at the time of his death, which occurred Saturday Nov. 7, at his home at Galesburg, was a sad shock to all who knew him. He was 53 years, 9 months and 3 days of age. He was a very congenial person, and he was very fond of children.

Deceased is survived by his wife, Grace Rose Banks, a sister, Mrs. R. O. Brownell of Kansas City, Mo., two brothers, Vincent of Fairfield, Wash., Charles of Yankton, S. D., three nieces and 5 nephews, and a great number of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and mother.

The Holy Sacrifice of Mass was offered for the repose of his soul, Monday, Nov. 9, at the Corpus Christi church, by Rev. J. Cronin at Galesburg and the remains were brought to Cresco Tuesday. Wednesday morning at the Holy Cross church at Schley a Requiem High Mass was offered by Rev. Hradeck., Rev. J. N. Lentz of St. John’s, Waterloo, preached the funeral sermon and the remains were laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

The pall bearers were his business associates namely: Louis Fowler, Waterloo, Clair Barber, Chicago, Morris Swineheart, Waterloo, Lou Whitman, Waterloo, Charlie Schaffner and Frank King of Waterloo.

Those from out of town attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Don Baker and Mrs. John White, Waterloo; Joe Ptachek and daughter Dorothy, Spring Valley; Mr. and Mrs. Gilman White, Waterloo; Dr. and Mrs. L. L. Snopek and Mrs. Mary Snopek, Dyersville and Mr. and Mrs. R. O. Brownell, Kansas City.
