FATAL ACCIDENT

Mr. Henry Splattstoser of Howard Center township, was killed Monday, at about the hour for closing the work of the day. He was alone in the field and was heard distinctly to cry whoa twice to his team, by the people in the house. When they had stopped the team and reached him they found him dead. From appearances it was thought he had concluded his days work and was about to spread a canvass over the harvester, which frightened the team, and in his attempt to stop it, was knocked down and run over by the reaper, there being evidence from his injuries that he was hit on the head in two places by the guards, producing wounds which would cause death. The deceased was about 50 years of age, leaves a wife who has four children by a former husband, his wife having been the widow Hilke, who is again widowed.

Transcribed from a newspaper clipping submitted by Janice Sowers.

Transriber’s Note: Henry’s name is spelled three different ways so all spellings are included in surnames. His widow’s obituary shows Splettstoeser, cemetery records show Splettstoszer and the newspaper a third spelling. Date of birth is shown in cemetery records as August 12, 1842 and date of death August 8, 1892.
