The following sketch of the life of Frank Shellhamer is reprinted from the Riceville Recorder. Mr. Shellhamer was a long time resident of Howard county and was well and favorably known to some of the older business men of Cresco.
Frank Shellhamer was born in Virginia on Oct. 3,1861. A few years later he moved with his parents to Pennsylvania, and later to the State of Nebraska and a few years later to Howard county, Iowa, where he resided until he departed this life, Jan. 8,1924, age 62 years, 3 months, and 5 days.
On March 16th,1887, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Young. To this union were born two daughters, Mrs. D.C. Grover who resides on her father's farm and Mrs. W.J. Bell of Eau Claire, Wis.
He was converted when a young man and united with the Baptist church of Riceville and was a faithful loyal member until the time of his death.
He was a most devoted husband and loving father and did all in his power to make his family happy. He loved his home and was never so happy as when he was doing something for his loved ones or neighbors.
He resided on his farm southeast of town for nearly 40 years. During all these years he enjoyed the best of health. On the 30th of December he complained of feeling tired and as though he might be getting La Grippe. The doctor was summoned and pronounced it jaundice but said he thought he would be better in a few days.
On Friday night he grew worse and pneumonia set in. He gradually grew weaker until God called for his Spirit at 12:50 Tuesday of this week. He never lost consciousness for a moment and was perfectly reconciled that God would have His way. Just a few minutes before he passed away he said,"Everything is all right." After this he went to sleep and went Home without a struggle. Going just as he had lived.
He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and two daughters, 4 grandchildren, his aged mother, 4 brothers, 3 sisters and a host of friends.
