L. W. Steinmetz Funeral Held in Church Saturday

Funeral services for Leonard William Steinmetz, 68, of Cresco, were held at the Cresco Immanuel Lutheran Church Saturday afternoon.

Mr. Steinmetz, who had been in good health all his life, died of a heart attack last Wednesday morning while working as custodian of the elementary school at the Howard County fairgrounds.

Conducting the funeral services was the pastor the Rev. E. C. Franke. Burial was in the Howard Center cemetery with the Bradley Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Steinmetz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Steinmetz was born in Winneshiek county August 30, 1896.

He was baptized in infancy in the Cresco Immanuel Lutheran church by the Rev. Mr. Niedermeier and confirmed by the Rev. John Piess April 2, 1911.

Mr. Steinmetz was married to Sigrid Otteson in the home of her parents in Chickasaw county November 20, 1924. Mr. and Mrs. Steinmetz became the parents of seven children, all of whom survive.

He farmed in the Cresco community all his life until he semi-retired and moved to Cresco in 1959. He was employed by the Howard and Winneshiek Community school district at the time of his death.

The well known Cresco man was active in the affairs of his church and community. He was a charter member of the Immanuel Lutheran Brotherhood and served on the church council for 14 years. For 20 years he was on the board of directors of the Farmers Creamery association. He was a director in the Winneshiek public schools and treasurer in the Howard public schools.

Surviving Mr. Steinmetz are his wife, four sons, Leonard and Harold of Cresco, Robert of Seattle, Washington, and Charles of Washington, D. C., and three daughters, Mrs. Herbert (Lois) Chyle of Decorah, Mrs. Robert (Marian) Wibben of Stewartville, Minnesota, and Janet Steinmetz of Winona. There are also 13 grandchildren, besides three brothers, Joel and Elmer Steinmetz of Cresco, and Clinton Steinmetz of DeForest, Wisconsin, and two sisters, Mrs. Luella Farnsworth of Austin, and Mrs. Charles Frank of Cresco.

Preceding Mr. Steinmetz in death were his parents and one grandchild.
