Carl Prinz Passes Away in Missouri
Was Former Resident of Howard County And One Time Steward of the County Farm
Carl Prinz, aged 88 years, died at his home in Thayer, Mo., May 10. Mr. Prinz had been a resident of Howard county for many years before moving to Missouri.
Carl Detliv Prinz was born at Glinde, near Cronsburg, Holstein, Germany, April 29, 1838.
The early part of his life was spent in his native village and after being past school age he learned the blacksmith trade in his father’s shop. In 1879 he was married to Kathryn Roeshman and shortly afterwards emigrated to this country arriving in Cresco the first of March the same year. He came to Howard county where he lived until fifteen years ago.
To own a home of his own was his aim and he bought a farm near Davis Corners. When the wheat crop failure struck this part of the country he like many others lost everything and this misfortune so discouraged him and made him so afraid of debt that he never dared buy here again, but lived on different rented farms west of Cresco.
The marriage was blessed with ten children, three sons and seven daughters, of whom one son, Charles, died in 1908, and one daughter, Ida, died in 1913. January 10, 1887, his wife, the partner in his early struggles, died, leaving him with ten small children. He never remarried but his daughter Anna, herself hardly more than a child, took charge of the household and made a home for him till the date of his death.
In 1900 Mr. Prinz was chosen steward of the county farm which position he filled for eleven years. Still he dreamed the dream of his youth to own a piece of the good old United States and since his means were such that he could not buy a farm in this vicinity without debt he found one to his liking near Thayer, Oregon county, Mo., where he moved in 1911. On this place he lived the last fifteen years of his life in good health, contentment and Godliness.
Several slight attacks of flu last winter weakened him considerably, but to all appearances he recovered. On Monday evening, May 10, he ate his supper as usual and went to bed complaining of feeling chilly. His daughter Anna carefully tucked the covers around him that he should sleep warm and his life passed out, having reached the age of 88 years and 12 days.
He leaves two sons and six daughters, twenty-three grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and an aged brother in Millard, Neb.
He was a man of more than ordinary intelligence, temperate in all things, of sterling honesty and uprightness and consequently enjoyed the confidence of his fellow men and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. In his church he was a sincere believer in Christ, a faithful bearer as well as doer of the work and from his slender means sacrificed liberally and cheerfully for the causes of God’s Kingdom.
The remains were sent from Thayer, Mo., to New Hampton and from there brought to Cresco on Friday accompanied by his daughter Anna and son F. A. Prinz of Cresco who met them at Kansas City. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at Immanuel’s Lutheran church conducted by Rev. John Pless and he was laid to rest by the side of his wife in Howard Center cemetery.
Mrs. Frank Bartels and Mrs. Agatha Beathker of Millard, Neb., nieces of the deceased were here for the funeral.
