Paul Ryan

Paul Edward Ryan, 75, of Rockford, Ill., died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, at his home in Rockford. Funeral services are Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Notre Dame parish in Cresco at 10 a.m., with Father Dennis Cahill presiding. Burial is at the St. Agnes cemetery, rural Cresco.

Paul Edward Ryan was born Sept. 11, 1935, the son of Gerald and Minnie (Broghammer) Ryan of rural Cresco. He attended rural country school and Ridgeway Public School through eighth grade. He helped his father on the farm until he entered the Air Force for four years, spending most of the time in Japan.

He went to McConnell Airline School in Minneapolis, Minn., then worked for nearly 40 years at O’Hare Field for United Airlines, in Chicago, before retiring.

Paul married Evelyn Piemonte in Chicago Dec. 12, 1976, with a reception held in Ridgeway. They lived in Chicago for several years before moving to Rockford.

He enjoyed coming back to the farm, especially seeing the crops and the modern machinery – he even liked to operate some of the machinery. Harvest time was his favorite time, as he would be operating the field chopper and helping fill silos for neighbors as well as the family farm. He loved his brothers and sisters and all of his nieces and nephews. His friends always were waiting for him so they could go out to eat and reminisce. From Olds and Buicks to Cadillacs, he was always proud of his cars.

Paul’s survivors are his wife, Evelyn; step-son, Larry Piemonte; step-daughter, Linda Upton; two step-grandsons, Evan and Philip Piemonte; one step great-grandchild, Seiryu Piemonte; three sisters: Anna Myers, Ridgeway, Joan (Leo) McGavick, Hayden, Idaho and Gerry (Les) Sorenson, Decorah; three brothers, Tom (Elsie), Phil (Ellen) and Dean (Marie), all of Cresco; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Hendy; brother, Robert Ryan; an infant brother, Norman and infant sister, Shirley; nieces, Diane Bruening and Jennifer Zweibohmer; nephew, Nicholas Sorenson; and brother-in-law, Gene Myers.
