Joyce Schissel
Joyce Schissel, 82, of East Gull Lake, Minn., died Sunday, July 10, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Mass of Christian Burial was 10 a.m. Friday, July 15, at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco, with Rev. Dennis H. Cahill officiating and the Conway Funeral Home assisting with arrangements. The lector was Lisa Saddler, the gifts were carried by Elli, Emma and Evan Saddler, the organist was Marilyn Novak and the song leader was Pam Daley. The casketbearers were Brian Novak, Dan Saddler, Kirk Novak, Harold Huhe, Steve Novak and Quentin Vsetecka; the interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. A memorial service was Saturday, July 16, at the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd, Minn.
Joyce Marie Schissel was born in Sumner Township, Winneshiek County, near Protivin, Aug. 6, 1928, the daughter of John and Della (Vsetecka) Novak. She attended the rural school near her home, then attended Cresco High School, graduating with the class of 1945. Joyce furthered her education to become a certified lab technician. She worked as a medical lab tech at the hospitals in Cresco, West Union and Elkader.
Sept. 3, 1958, Joyce was united in marriage to Dale Schissel at St. Joseph’s Church in Cresco. They farmed east of Cresco and owned and operated the Kozy Korners in Ridgeway about 10 years. They then bought and operated the Tower Club at Cresco for five or six years. Moving to Minnesota, they bought the Big Chief Resort on Gull Lake and operated it for about five years. They continued catering after their retirement.
Dale died in 1998, and Joyce remained living in East Gull Lake, visiting Cresco often and wintering in Florida. She enjoyed her _____ and having fun with her family and friends. She was a member of _____ Legion Auxiliary.
Joyce is survived by her children: Dr. Dawn (Ronald) Lauridsen of West Des Moines, Dr. Dionne (Joe) Dynlacht of Indianapolis, Ind., Dana (Tracie) Schissel of Brainerd, Minn., Melanie (John) Perry of Ft. Myers, Fla. and John (Jennifer) of Little Rock, Ark.; eight grandchildren: Elyse and Wesley Dynlacht; Erik Schissel; Jake, Beck and Dex Schissel; Laura and Angie Lauridsen; and John Perry; one great-grandchild, Morgan Hines.
Preceding Joyce in death were her parents, her husband, Dale and a brother, Allan Novak.
