Death of John W. Davis

John W. Davis, a former resident of Lime Springs, died in the Elks old folks home in Bedford, Virginia, where he had lived for several months. He had lived in Huron, S. D., for 25 years before going to the Elks home. The Daily Huronite prints the following sketch of his life:

John W. Davis, resident of Huron for the past 25 years until a few months ago when he left to take up his residence in the Elks national home at Bedford, Va., died in the hospital at the Elks home Saturday morning.

Mr. Davis, who was 84 years old, was taken ill early last week, but apparently was recovering resulting in his death Saturday.

Born at Watertown, Wis., May 1, 1861, Mr. Davis was employed as a locomotive engineer for the Chicago & North Western Railroad on the Escanaba, Michigan, division, and upon his retirement was engaged in farming near Lime Springs, Iowa. He came to Heron in 1920 and was employed at the city water plant. For the past 15 years he was elevator operator at the Marvin Hughitt Hotel.

A member of Huron Elks lodge No. 444 since 1923, he went to the Elks national home at Bedford to make his home last May.

Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Emma J. Plummer of Huron. Mrs. Plummer, the former Emma Davis lived with the family near Lime Springs. He is survived also by several nephews and nieces, including S. W. Plummer, Chicago; W. H. Plummer, Lewistown, Mont.; W. M. Plummer, Huron; Ruth Plummer, Huron; Mrs. W. H. Baddeley, Watertown, S. D.; Mrs. Hedley Brook, Franklinville, N. Y.; and Mrs. Lewis J. Williams, Olean, N. Y. His parents and several brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at the Elks national home Monday, with burial in the lodge’s national cemetery at Bedford.
