Elizabeth “Liz” Durfey, 99, of Cresco, Iowa passed away on Friday, September 28, 2012 at Evans Memorial Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 5, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Friday. The Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home 404 North Elm Street Cresco, Iowa is in charge of arrangements. Elizabeth A. “Liz” Durfey was born on May 30, 1913 in Cresco, IA to Frank and Louisa (Swestka) Pecinovsky. She graduated from Cresco High School with the class of 1931. After high school she went to secretarial school in Chicago, and then moved to Burbank, California. She worked her way up to become the head secretary at Gladden McBean in California, which made Franciscan china and pottery. While living in California she was very active with her church, knitting, traveling, and making crafts. While on vacation back to Cresco, Liz ran into her high school sweetheart, Albert “Jinx” Durfey, their feelings for one another were rekindled. On July 30, 1983 they married at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco, and made their home in Winona, MN. She returned to Cresco in 1991 after Jinx died to be closer to her siblings. Liz enjoyed watching baseball, the Lawrence Welk Show, and collecting butterflies. When out with family and friends Liz would treat herself to a margarita and steak. Liz is survived by her nieces and nephews, Ronald Pecinovsky of Green Valley, AZ, Carol Foley of Cresco, Suzanne (Jim) Downey of Colorado Springs, CO, Linda Rose of Carmel, Indiana, David (Ginny) Pecinovsky of Lawrence, Kansas, and Mike (Marion) Pesky of Sioux City, IA, Mary (Rex) Dodson, of Winona, MN, Robert (Ann) Durfey of Bay Field, WI, and John (Lois) of Winona, MN, several great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews, her 3 step-children, George (Edith) Durfey of Menlo Park, CA, William Durfey of San Jose, CA, and Ruth (Nick) Wilson of Desoto,TX, several step grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Albert “Jinx” Durfey, 4 brothers, Ed, Adoph, Art, and Don, and 2 sisters, Emma, and Jerry.
