Bernice J. Schmauss, 95, of Cresco, Iowa passed away on Friday, April 20, 2012 at the Cresco Care Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church with Father Dennis Cahill officiating. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home 404 North Elm Street Cresco, Iowa with a scripture wake service to follow. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services at the church. Bernice J. Schmauss was born on September 11, 1916 on the family farm in Howard County to William and Evelyn (Hunt) O'Brien. On June 15, 1938 Bernice married Francis Schmauss at Assumption Catholic Church. They made their home on a farm in the Cresco and Lime Springs areas for 35 years. They retired and moved into Cresco in 1973. She was a member of the Assumption Church and belonged to the St. Cecelia's Rosary Society. Bernice enjoyed sewing, gardening, and followed high school wrestling and football games. Bernice is survived by her children, Connie (Robert) Whitinger of Ankeny, IA, Richard of Cresco, Nancy (Maurice) Meyers of Rochester, MN, Michael (Mary) of Denver, IA, Carol (Michael) Stokes of Chatfield, MN, John (Nancy) of Cresco, and Alan of Cresco, her daughter-in-law, Helen of Cresco, 16 grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, and her sisters, Frances Schwickerath of Cedar Falls, IA, Elizabeth (Dewayne) Kruger of Waterloo, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Francis, son Merlin, her sisters Myrtle Walter, Marguerite Schoeberl, and Cecelia Richardson, and her brothers, William and Edward O'Brien. A special thank you to the staff at the Cresco Care Center for their kind and compassionate care.
