LEO LOUIS PECINOVSKY
Leo Pecinovsky died peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester Minnesota on Saturday February 11, 2012 with his family nearby. He was a cancer survivor of sixteen years and successfully fought many other illnesses over the years with courage and a love of life. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 17, 2012 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Nick March officiating.
Burial will be held in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, February 16, 2012, with a Scripture Service at 5:00 p.m., at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home 123 North Main St. in Protivin, Iowa. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Leo was born on October 9, 1937 to Leo A. Pecinovsky and Elizabeth (Stika) at home in Howard County. He attended school at Oregon #6, Holy Trinity Grade School and Rodolphinum High School in Protivin from where he graduated in 1956. Leo served in the United States Army from January 1961 to January 1963. While in the Army he was Specialist 5th Class serving at Fort Riley Kansas in the Irwin Army Hospital as a pharmacist aide. He was a life time member of Holy Trinity Church, America Legion POST 605 and volunteer member of the Protivin Fire Department.
On June 4, 1962 he married Elmaire (Wagner) at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin and they were the proud parents of Allen, Gary and Nancy. They raised their children and spent their happy years together in Protivin. Leo worked at the Boeke Drug Store in Cresco, Fencil Oil Company of Protivin and the Coast to Coast Hardware Store in Cresco before he had to retire early due to a disability. He enjoyed fishing and in particular turtle fishing with his friends where they shared the Bohemian beverage of choice, but never before 8:00 A.M. He was a loyal fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins. When his favorite teams were not playing he enjoyed watching other sport programs and playing cards. He enjoyed gardening and was famous for his large potato patch next to the house. Leo faithfully tracked the exploits of his children and grandchildren and they made countless phone calls to keep him updated. He had a lot of difficulty getting around but pushed himself to attend at least once a year. He was always called the gum grandpa because whenever his grandchildren visited he gave them a stick of gum.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years Elmarie and their children Allen (Janel) Pecinovsky of Lewiston Minnesota and their children Adam, Sarah and Cody, Gary (Micki) Pecinovsky and their children Kristy and Clint of Protivin and Nancy Hagensick and her children Andrew, Nicholas and Thomas Leo of Springville Iowa. He was also survived by his brother Edmund (Carolyn) of Roseville California and sister Monica (Calvin) Leeps of Flint Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Rita and Giovanni.
