Mrs. Edward Dotzler, Mother of 17, Dies in Cresco Hospital

Native of Cresco Ill For More than Year; 13 of children Living; Funeral Saturday

Mrs. Edward Dotzler, 56, of Cresco, mother of 17 children, died in the Cresco hospital Thursday morning following an illness of over a year. She had been a patient in the hospital for nine days.

Funeral services for Mrs. Dotzler were held Saturday afternoon in the Methodist church with the Rev. Robert Butler, the pastor, was in charge. Burial was in the Howard Center cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Bradley Funeral home.

Mrs. Dotzler, the former Mae Agnes Shafer, the only daughter of Mrs. Laura E. Shafer of Cresco, and the late William Shafer, was born in Cresco November 14, 1894. Her parents were pioneer residents of Howard county.

She was married to Edward Dotzler February 18, 1915 at Cresco. The couple became the parents of 16 children and had adopted one son, Dennis, age 7. Of the 17 children in the family, 13 survive. Mrs. Dotzler was a life-long resident of the Cresco community.

Surviving Mrs. Dotzler are her husband and children, Edward, James, Henry, Lyle, Mrs. Ralph (Hazel) Daws of Dell Rapids, South Dakota, John, Steve, Mrs. Lawrence (Charlotte) Lepa, Mrs. Michael (Bessie) Foley, Jr., Edith, Anna, Eugene and Dennis.

Also surviving are 19 grandchildren and three brothers, James Shafer of Cresco, Fred Shafer of Iowa City and Louis Shafer of Waterloo, and her mother, Mrs. Laura Shafer of Cresco.

Preceding Mrs. Dotzler in death were her father; three sons, William and Wayne, twin sons who died in infancy, and Dennis, who was killed in action in World war II, and a daughter, Frances.
