Carl Henke, 65, Died Tuesday in Veterans Hospital

Carl Henke, 65, Cresco laborer and veteran of World war I, died in the Veterans’ hospital in Iowa City, yesterday morning.

Mr. Henke was a patient in the Cresco hospital the last four weeks.

Funeral services for Mr. Henke have been set for Friday afternoon at 2:00 at the Cresco Immanuel Lutheran church. Burial will be in the Howard Center cemetery. Bradley Funeral home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Carl Henke, son of the last Mr. and Mrs. Albert Henke, was born in Howard Center township July 22, 1895.

Surviving Mr. Henke are three sisters, Mrs. Raymond Mackenburg, of Cresco, Mrs. Lowell Johnson, of Harmony, and Mrs. Oscar Richter, of Saint Paul, and four brothers, Elmer Henke, of Rochester, Alvin and Arnold Henke, of Austin, and Arthur Henke, of Hanover, Illinois.

Funeral Services For Carl J. Henke Friday Afternoon

Funeral services for Carl John J. Henke, 65 of Cresco, who died in the Veterans’ hospital, in Iowa City, last Tuesday, were held at the Cresco Immanuel Lutheran church Friday afternoon.

Conducting the funeral services was the Rev. E. C. Franke. Burial was in the Howard Center cemetery with the Bradley Funeral home in charge.

Six nephews served as pallbearers, including Harold Richter, Donald Johnson, Robert Johnson, Richard Johnson, Roger Johnson and James Johnson.

Carl John Julius Henke, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Albert Henke, was born near Davis Corners July 22, 1895. He was baptized in the Davis Corners Lutheran church August 11, 1895. He was confirmed in the same church on April 3, 1910.

Mr. Henke served his country during World War one, serving on the battle front in France for nearly a year.

Mr. Henke farmed with his father and later farmed the home place on his own for nearly eight years before the farm was sold. He then rented another farm for several years after which he moved to Cresco. He lived with his father until the elder Mr. Henke’s death in 1953. Since then Mr. Henke lived alone in Cresco. In recent years he did some painting and other odd jobs.

Mr. Henke’s mother died in 1948. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran church most of his life.

The Cresco man was never in good health, having been gassed during World war one. He underwent six operations, four of them major. He was taken to the Veterans’ hospital, in Iowa City, April 8, and on April 14 was operated on for stomach cancer. Serious infection developed, and he had to undergo another operation. He never recovered from the last surgery.

Surviving Mr. Henke are his sisters, Mrs. Bertha Mackenburg of Cresco, Mrs. Oscar Richter of Saint Paul, and Mrs. Lowell Johnson of Harmony, and his brothers, Elmer of Rochester, Elvin of Austin, Arthur of Hanover, Illinois, and Arnold of Austin. Ten nephews and three nieces also survive.
