Services held for Doris Svec, 69

Funeral services for Doris Svec of Cedar Rapids were held on Friday, August 7 at Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church with interment following in the Czech National Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Rev. Karl Glovik officiated. Papich-Kuba Funeral Service in Cedar Rapids handled the arrangements.

Doris, 69, died at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, August 4, 1998.

Doris was born on July 21, 1929 in Protivin and came to Cedar Rapids in the late 1940’s. She was employed in the packaging department of Quaker Oats Co. from 1953-1959. Doris married Stephen R. “Dick” Svec June 16, 1956 at Morton Grove, IL. They renewed their marriage vows on March 20, 1998 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Doris was employed as a cook in the Cedar Room at Armstrong’s for nine years until her retirement in 1987. She had also volunteered on a part time basis in the Hot Lunch Program at Hayes School and volunteered with her husband at Mercy Medical Center for about eight years until the time of her illness. Doris was a member of the Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Stephen R. “Dick” Svec; four children: Kathy Willenborg, Jim Pechota, and Gary Pechota, all of Cedar Rapids, and Stephanie Sankot of Norway; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one sister, Grace Slifka of Cresco; one brother, Leonard Lukes of Protivin; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Albina Riha Lukes; one sister, Alice Fencl; and one brother, Marvin Lukes.
