Services held for Ethel Sexton, 90
Funeral services for Ethel Sexton, 90, were held Friday, March 13 at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco with the Rev. Michael L. Tauke officiating. Pallbearers were grandchildren: Richard McConnell, Michael McConnell, Timothy McConnell, Julie Stevens, Brian Boyd, Chris Boyd, Tony Boyd, and Dan Boyd. Interment was in St. Agnes Cemetery in Plymouth Rock.
Ethel Sexton died Tuesday, March 10, 1998 at the Cresco Care Center.
Ethel Amelia Sexton was born on January 22, 1908 in Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Ellen “Nellie” (Snyder) Hanlon. She attended the rural Winneshiek County schools, graduating from Mount Mercy Academy in Cedar Rapids, and took teacher training at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She returned to Winneshiek County and taught in the rural schools.
On August 5, 1930 she was united in marriage to Joseph Sexton at St. Agnes Church in Plymouth Rock. They moved onto the farm and she raised her family of seven children. They moved into Cresco in 1969 and her husband Joseph died the following year. She remained in her home until entering the nursing home in January of 1997.
She belonged to the Assumption Church, Assumption Rosary Society, and was a former member of the Hospital Auxiliary, and American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include her children: Shirley McConnell, James Sexton, and Jerome Sexton, Monica Malli, all of Cresco, John of Denver, CO, and Sharon Boyd of Mechanicsville, IA; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers: Lyle Hanlon of Harmony, MN, and Paul Hanlon of LaPorte City; two sisters: Mae Armstrong of Rochester, MN and Dolores Quinn of Allen Park, MI.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son: Earl Sexton, one grandchild, four brothers: Byron Hanlon, Thomas Hanlon, Francis Hanlon, and Joseph Hanlon; and three sisters: Rita Kingsley, Agnes Armstrong, and Esther Carolan.
