F. M. Baldwin, an old and well known citizen of Howard County, was killed almost instantly, last week, near Waukon, by his team running away.
We got the following particulars from J. C. Richardson, his business partner, who was engaged with him in selling the patent water elevator, Mr. Baldwin, together with a Mr. Smith and wife went to Waukon with a team (Mr. Smith living about three miles from town) in the evening. They started to return about 9 o'clock and when about two miles from Waukon, while going down hill the horses seemed to have got frightened and started to run, and going around a curve, up set the vehicle, throwing Mr. Smith and wife over the fence with such force as to cause them to lie senseless for nearly an hour. It seems Mr. Baldwin hung to the lines and was thrown through the fence. After about an hour Mr. Smith came to sufficiently to get to a house close at hand and procure help. When found, Mr. Baldwin was just alive but did not speak, and breathed his last in a few minutes. His remains were brought home for interment. Mr. Smith and lady were both severly but it is hoped not dangerously injured. Mr. Richardson informs us that none of the party were intoxicated and neither had drank a drop of liquor. The sad accident was purely an accident, over which no human agency had control.
