DEATH of Mr. D. W. Carpenter--This morning about 3 o'clock, Mr. Carpenter, a well known citizen of Austin, died at his residence, of typhoid fever. He had been sick but about two weeks, and his symptoms were not condidered at all dangerous, till within the past day or two. The news of his death startled the community like a thunder clap-not even many of his dearest friends being aware of his sickness till the sad news of his demise reached their ears.

Mr. Carpenter was an extensive railroad contrator, under his direction every mile of the iron on the Iowa and Minnesota division of the Milwankee and St. Paul Railway, was laid. Last summer he completed the Dakota division of the Road through to Mason City. He was an honorble man, and an active energetic worker. The building of railroads has been the study and labor of his life. He leaves an estimable wife, two children, a very many friends, to mourn his departure to a better world. He had an insurance on his life of $2,000, and leaves behind an extensive property. AUSTIN REGISTER
