William Walter
Wm. Walter was born in Germany, Dec. 29 1845, and died at the home of his son Leonard July 11, 1917, aged 71 years, 6 months and 10 days. He with other members of the family came to America in 1866 settling in Michigan. Here in the year 1869 he married Miss Wilhelmina Knuth. They lived happily together for 47 years, sharing life's joys and sorrows together until Mrs. Walter died a little over a year ago.
They came to Iowa in 1870 and bought a farm in Albion twp., Howard county, where by hardwork and frugality he procured a fine home and large tract of land. He endured many of the hardships and privations of the pioneer life, and was a great help in promoting the interests of the community in which he lived, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Bro. Walter was converted in 1869 and was interested in the work of the church, he being one of the charter members of the Albion Evangelical church. Their home was always open to the ministers of the gospel and he was ever ready to assist financially as well by his presence and prayers. He showed his love for the church of his choice, not only by supporting the local work, but he also remembered our general benevolences and missions by giving the sum of $1000 for those purposes. This was shortly before his death.
He leaves to mourn his death, one brother, August Walter, and one sister, Mrs. John Dempewolf of Cresco, an aged uncle and twelve children as follows: Charles, Sebeka, Minn.; William, Blackwater, N. D.; John, Cresco; Gust and Mrs. Emma Plehn, Alta Vista; Harry and Herbert, Cresco; Mrs. Lena Reuter, Harmony; Earnest and Louis, Cresco; Mrs. Ella Burmeister, Harmony; Leonard, Cresco. Besides these he leaves a number of grandchildren and other relatives and countless friends.
His wife and four children preceded him in death, Arthur Walter of Cresco, dying about three months ago.
After suffering many months his body wasted away, but his mind was clear unto the end. He had often expressed the desire to go. His end was peaceful.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the Evangelical church and conducted by the pastor Rev. Scholer. The large attendance at the funeral showed the respect the community had for the deceased. The church was far too small to accommodate the crowd, many in attendance from Cresco and other points.
Card of Thanks.
We desire to express our heartfelt thanks for the many acts of kindness, words of sympathy and comfort, and the beautiful flowers received during the time of illness and death of our father and brother, Wm. Walter. We wish also to thank the choir for the services rendered. The Children.
Aug. Walter.
