John Walter, Sr.
John Walter, Sr. was born on the 12th day of June, 1816, in the Province of Posen, Prussia, Germany, and died on the 10th day of December, 1910; his age being 94 years, 5 months and 28 days.
In 1866 he left his Fatherland and emigrated to America, residing for about three years in the state of Michigan, after which he came to Howard County, Iowa, to live with his son William, where he resided for 41 years, at which place he also died on the above named date.
He was married in Germany to Miss Henrietta Reetz. This union was blessed with three sons and three daughters, of whom three children still remain, while the mother preceded him in death 43 years ago. The children remaining are two sons, Wm. and August Walter, and one daughter, Mrs. John Dempewolf, of Cresco. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, an aged brother and a large circle of other relatives, as well as friends and acquaintances.
Father Walter was brought under the influence of the Evangelical Association in 1870. He accepted Christ as his personal Saviour and became a devoted member of the above named church through the labors of Rev. J. H. Pippert, who at that time was engaged in missionary work of said church in this neighborhood. He loved the House of God and attended faithfully the regular services as long as it was possible for him to do so. The reading of God's word and prayer were sacred devotions to him; even the last few days of his life were engaged in this way. He longed to go home and be at rest; this, his longing, God graciously fulfilled on the 10th day of December, 1910.
The funeral occurred from the home and the Albion Evangelical Church on Tuesday afternoon, and was conducted by his pastor, J. C. Schwab.
