Funeral services for LaVern Gaul of Cresco were held at 2:00 p.m. on October 3, 1996 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Fitzgerald officiating. Interment was in the New Oregon Cemetery. He died on September 30, 1996 at Howard County Hospital in Cresco at the age of 66.

LaVern Gaul was born on April 30, 1930, in Winneshiek County, the son of William and Alice (Whalen) Gaul. He attended the rural schools and served his country during the Korean Conflict.

On June 22, 1968, he was united in marriage to Elaine Fye. They made their home in Cresco and LaVern farmed until retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine of Cresco; two sons, Brian of Iowa City, IA, and Troy of Cupertino, CA; one granddaughter; three sisters, Grace Rupple of Decorah, Rosanna Pfeifer of Woodland Hills, CA, and Doris Svetnicka of Madison, WI; one brother, Dwain Gaul of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, John, Parnell, Joe, William, and Leonard; and two sisters, Mary Witzke and Genevieve Hannah.
