John Herman, son of Herman and Fredaricke Eckstein, was born May 12th, 1856, in Cleveland, Ohio, came to Chester township, Howard county, Iowa in October, when about five months old with his parents where they settled on a farm, where he lived and grew to manhood. In the spring of 1880 he went to Forestburg, Sanborn county, S. D., took up a homestead. He lived in Dakota on his claim and farmed it till 1890. Becoming badly afflicted with rheumatism he rented his claim and returned to Iowa. From 1890 till 1904 he spent part of his time in Iowa and part in South Dakota. On Dec. 26th, 1904, he was married to Miss Julia Aga at Prairie du Chien, Wis. In September, 1905, he moved to a small farm near LeRoy, Minn. The spring of 1914 he sold this place and moved into LeRoy where he lived until he was called to his everlasting home beyond on Tuesday morning Sept. 26th, 1916.

He united with the Presbyterian church of LeRoy in the spring of 1909, also a member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows and a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. He leaves a wife and one son Ernest A., one son having died in infancy; also two brother, R. A. Eckstein of Chester, Iowa, and E. J. Eckstein of Redlands, California, and many relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church of LeRoy on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 28th, Rev. O. C. Gross officiating. Burial in Chester cemetery. The Odd Fellows and Woodmen had charge of the service at the grave.
