Asa, son of Luke and Mary Styles Barrett, was born at Kingston, Canada, April 19, 1830, and was one of the family of seven children. He moved to Will county, Ill., in 1849, was united in marriage to Evalina Avery, November 20, 1861, moved to Minnesota just across the line from Chester in 1868, lived on the same farm until 1900 when he moved to Chillicothe, Mo. He was one of the sturdy pioneers who helped make the country, gave much land for the school site which is still known as the Barrett school. He was always interested in school and educational work; a man who commanded respect of all; a friend of the needy and stood for the best in every thing; quiet unasuming manner and testing qualities.

Three children were born to them, Albert of Chester, Mrs. Lora Hall of Manhattan, Kan., and Miss Alta of Chillicothe, Mo., and six grandchildren. He was the last of four brothers. he has one sister Mrs. Pamelia Parker of LeRoy.

After a brief illness he departed this life at his home in Chillicothe, Mo., on Sept. 20, 1916, was brought to Chester the 22nd and taken to the home of his son. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Chester, which was beautifully decorated by kind friends Saturday afternoon. He was laid to rest in Chester cemetery by the side of his wife who died Feb. 18?, 1911. Rev. E. C. Groves of LeRoy conducted the services in the absence of the pastor. Those who attended the funeral from away were Mrs. Laura Hall of Manhatten, Kan., Miss Alta Barrett, Chillicothe, Mo., Edgar and Eva Gates of Yorkville, Ill., Alfred Hall of Etna, Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Davis of Lime Springs, Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Eaton of Cresco, Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Porter, Lyon Porter, Mrs. Frank Young, Mr. and Mrs. Gay Kingsley, Mrs. Ed Sweet of LeRoy, Mrs. W. A. Murray, Mrs. W. A. Hungerford, son and daughter Alta and Ada of Austin. The profusion of flowers spoke of love of the friends. The pall bearers were Mr. Fred Eckstein, Mr. Win Carter, Mr. Bert Ellis, Mr. L. A. Eggerichs, Mr. Jerone Roper, Mr. John Philer.
