Lydia VanSlack was born in Otsego county, New York, July 15, 1827, and died at Riceville, Iowa June 6th, 1916, aged 88 years, 10 months, and 24 days.

She was married to Peter Nemire March 7, 1848. In 1853, they came west and settled in Jackson county, Iowa, where they remained five years. They then removed to Winona county, Minnesota, and at the outbreak of the Indian massacre in Minnesota, Mr. Nemire enlisted for three years of the war. After the Indian rebellion he was transfered to the western division of the army during the Civil war and died at Paducah, Kentucky.

In 1870, the family removed to Howard county, Iowa. Mrs. Nemire has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Irvin, nearly all the remaining time of her life.

She leaves to mourn her death, one son, D. I. Nemire, of Minneapolis, and one daughter, Mrs. Jos. Irvin of Riceville. Two daughters preceeded her, Mrs. C. E. O'Brien and Mrs. Chas. Sigler both of Saratoga. There remains one sister, Mrs. Painton of Marshfield, Wis., fifteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
