Marshall O. C. Humphrey died very suddenly last Thursday from paralysis of the heart. He had not been feeling well for a matter of a week or ten days but kept about his work most of the time. Thursday he was taken with acute pain and Dr. Lee was called in and medicine given him. He lay down on the bed, Mrs. Humphrey and the physician being in the sitting room. A few moments later Mr. Humphrey called and when Dr. Lee reached him he saw that he was dying.
Mr. Humphrey had made Riceville his home for a great many years and was a familiar figure on the streets, having served as nightwatch and marshal for twelve years.
Oscar Charles Humphrey was born in Trumble county, Ohio, Jan. 1. 1844. He moved with his parents onto a farm near Cresco, Iowa in 1855.
He enlisted in the Civil War in 1861, in the 9th Iowa Infantry; came to Jamestown township after the war.
He was married to Mary Elizabeth Cutting on Oct. 26, 1878. To this union were born George B., Frank A., Norris R., and Sarah C., the youngest dying at the age of four years.
He remained in Jamestown and vicinity until his death, which occurred Jan. 4, 1912. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and three sons, with other relatives and friends.
