JONATHAN S. POTTER

On Tuesday of last week, Nov. 2, 1910, occurred the death of another of the pioneer residents of Howard county and of Riveville, Jonathan S. Potter, a short notice of which was made in last week's recorder.

Mr. Potter came to Howard county from Wisconsin in 1856, which with the time spent in Riceville would make hime a resident of fifty-three years standing. During this time he was engaged in various enterprises in Howard County, in Cresco and and in Riceville.

Arriving in 1856 he settled on a farm in Howard county, following that occupation until 1878, at which time he moved to Cresco and operated a meat shop there for about three years, coming to Riceville in 1881 and embarking in the mercantile business, running a general store up to the time when the railroad was put through. About that time S. A. Hubbell became partner in the business. During this partnership Mr. potter had secured the Adams interests in the creamery and operated that.

Potter & Hubbell continued business for three or four years, when C. F. Bartlett bought the Hubbell interest in the firm.

Later J. S. Potter sold to F. W. Taber. Six months later the partnership of J. S. Potter & Son was formed, C. G. Potter being the junior partner. In 1901 this firm was burned out in the Riceville fire and the senior Mr. Potter retired from active business.
