From the Scrapbook of Newspaper Artiles by Mrs. Lilliam Wheeler

Augusta Charlotta Markhoph was born in Damrow, Germany, Sept. 29, 1833. On Dec. 3, 1858, she was married to Ferdinand Sprung.

With her husband she came to America and settled in Mitchell county, and for ten years they experienced pioneer life. In 1876 they moved to Howard county, and with the exception of two years in or near Riceville.

To this union were born seven children. Four daughters and one son survive her, two having preceded her to the home beyond the tide.

She united with the Lutheran church when but fourteen years of age and during the remaining years of her life she was loyal to her church and a true Christian woman.

Since last November she has been greatly afflicted, but through it all she has been patient, waiting her Heavenly Father's will. Mrs. Sprung was a kind and loving mother and neighbor, one of those characters you cannot easily forget.

Such beautiful, beartiful hands
They're neither white nor small
And you, I know, would scarcely think
That they were fair at all.
I've looked on hands whose form and hue
A sculptor's dream might be
Yet are my mother's wrinkled hands
More beautiful to me.

And oh, beyond the shadow land
Where all is bright and fair
I know full well those dear old hands
Shall palm of victory wear
Where crystal streams through endless years
Flow over golden sands
There where the old grow young again
I'll clasp my mother's hands.
