A Surprise.
Thursday, the 8th of this month Mr. and Mrs. Martin Betts who live northeast of town, were invited away to dinner. A telephone call soon brought them home. Upon their arrival they found their home filled with friends, neighbors, the G. A. R. and W. R. C. It reminded Mr. and Mrs. Betts that this was their wedding day, that forty years ago the 8th of February, 1866, they were married by Elder Windsor of New Oregon, soon after the close of the civil war.
They began housekeeping on the the {sic} farm Mr. Betts had purchased before he went to the war and which has grown dear to them and is still their home. An elegant dinner was served by their friends who requested that they with their children and families should occupy the first table. After all was served Mr. Durgin made a very appropriate presentation speech of the beautiful and appropriate gifts. A lovely tablecloth and napkins by G. A. R. and W. R. C. Sofa by G. A. R. and old friends; China closet by friends; a dainty tatting collar by Mrs. Emma River; a lovely tidy by Miss Grace River; a beautiful China fruit dish by Mr. and Mrs. Wm. River; a pretty salad dish by Mrs. Ella Bents; a lovely China bread tray by Mrs. J. K. Helmer. Two elegant gold G. A. R. and W. R C. badges by Wesley Swenson; a 100-piece China dinner set by their children.
Many friends came during the afternoon and evening. The young people filled the rooms, making merry till the wee small hours of the night, and old and young joined in saying they had a delightful time.
