Info on Wm & Mary Dawson

My G-Grandfather was Ruben H. Dawson. In searching thru the court house in Mt. Pleasant in the Assessor's offce looking for the 40 acre plot of farmground that my G-Grandfather owned, it appeared to have been either handed down or sold to him by William Dawson. Wm Dawson originally owned a 200Acre plot of land & there was evidence that he had a son by the name of Byron that inherited 160 acres & the 40 went to my G-Grandfather Ruben. There was also mentioned the name of a daughter to William by the name of Serena Guess.
What I'm wondering is if this William Dawson would have been my Great-Great Grandfather or my G-Grandfather's brother?
Any info would be appreciated.
