Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your response. I too am leaning towards Frederick and Eliza being the parents of "my" Jeremiah. I know that Frederick's son, like his uncle, went by Jerry which would explain the "junior" part.

I had not thought of the possibility that Smith was named after a paternal grandmother's maiden name. That adds another layer of certainty.

I'm still looking for some type of documentation, so many relatives on this branch of my tree have named their children after their siblings it's a little more than crazy and this is not the first time I (or someone else) has run into a problem like this.
